Dubai is one of the world’s cheapest places to buy gold β no VAT on gold jewellery, competitive pricing, and a massive selection. So it’s no surprise that Indians returning from Dubai almost always ask: how much gold can I actually carry back?
Here’s what Indian customs allows as of 2025:
If you’ve stayed abroad for 6 months or more:
- Women can bring up to 40 grams of gold jewellery duty-free
- Men can bring up to 20 grams duty-free
- The duty-free value cap is βΉ1,00,000
If you’ve stayed abroad for less than 6 months:
- The duty-free allowance drops to just βΉ15,000 worth of goods (gold included)
Beyond these limits, you’ll pay customs duty of 15% + IGST of 3% β which quickly eats into the savings you made buying in Dubai.
A few important points: gold coins and bars are not covered under the duty-free allowance β only jewellery worn or carried as personal effects qualifies. Also, all gold must be declared at the customs red channel if it exceeds your limit.
The savings on Dubai gold are real, but staying within your customs limit is what makes the trip actually worth it.
