Last updated: May 2026 | Live Abu Dhabi gold rate: Check AED price →
Most people who come to Abu Dhabi for gold shopping have already been to the Dubai Gold Souk. They arrive at Madinat Zayed expecting something similar — the narrow lanes, the crowds, the covered alleys — and find something quite different.
The Abu Dhabi Gold Souk is indoors. Air-conditioned. Quieter. The shops are arranged arcade-style inside a proper mall complex, not along open-air lanes. The pace is slower, the pressure from shopkeepers is lower, and the staff tend to spend more time with each buyer rather than managing a constant flow of tourists.
That’s not a compromise. For many buyers, particularly residents of Abu Dhabi and visitors who want to shop without being rushed, it’s actually a better environment to make a significant purchase. The gold is the same — same international rate, same hallmarking rules, same UAE regulations. What changes is the experience of getting there.
This guide covers everything specific to buying gold at Madinat Zayed — the layout, the shops, how pricing works here, what makes it different from Dubai, and how to make the most of your visit.

Where It Is and How to Get There
Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre sits in Al Danah — one of Abu Dhabi’s central residential and commercial districts, bounded between Airport Road and Muroor Road. It is one of the oldest malls in the capital, managed by the LuLu Group, and has anchored Abu Dhabi’s gold retail trade for decades.
The Gold Centre is attached to the main mall building. When you enter Madinat Zayed, signs for the Gold Centre direct you to the jewellery section, which is a distinct wing from the general retail area.
By taxi or Careem/Uber: Tell the driver “Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre” or “Abu Dhabi Gold Souk.” Both are well known. It is centrally located — from most hotels and residential areas in Abu Dhabi city, the ride takes 10–20 minutes.
By car: Parking is free and ample at the mall — a meaningful advantage over Dubai’s Gold Souk where parking is genuinely difficult. For Abu Dhabi residents driving in for a morning of shopping, this alone makes Madinat Zayed the easier option.
By bus: Several RTA Abu Dhabi bus routes stop near the Madinat Zayed area. Practical for residents familiar with the network.
From Dubai: The drive from central Dubai takes roughly 90–100 minutes (E11, Sheikh Zayed Road). Most buyers making the trip from Dubai specifically for gold are usually buying at volume — the savings on making charges need to justify the journey. For small purchases, it’s not worth the trip over Dubai’s own options.
What Makes This Souk Different from Dubai
This is the question most visitors have implicitly, even if they don’t ask it directly. Here’s an honest comparison:
Atmosphere: Dubai’s Deira Gold Souk is an outdoor-adjacent traditional bazaar with covered alleys, street-level energy, and constant foot traffic. Madinat Zayed is an indoor mall-format souk — calmer, cooler, and more structured. Neither is better universally; they serve different moods.
Crowd level: Significantly quieter than Dubai. Abu Dhabi’s gold market serves primarily UAE residents — government employees, expats in the capital, families shopping for weddings and occasions. The tourist foot traffic that characterises Deira is largely absent here. This has a practical consequence: shopkeepers have more time per customer, and you can browse without feeling like you need to make a decision quickly.
Making charges: Abu Dhabi shops are generally competitive on making charges, often comparable to or slightly lower than Dubai’s Gold Souk because the customer base is more local and repeat-business oriented. There’s less of the “tourist premium” that can inflate initial quotes at heavily visited Deira shops.
Variety: Dubai wins on sheer scale — 380+ shops versus approximately 70 at Madinat Zayed. However, 70 shops is still a substantial selection covering all karats, styles, and price points. For most buyers, the variety is more than sufficient.
Bullion buying: Dubai has a more developed investment-gold ecosystem for bars and coins, with more specialist bullion dealers. For jewellery purchases, Abu Dhabi is fully competitive.
Selling old gold: Both souks have active buyback markets. Abu Dhabi is generally considered better for a relaxed, less-pressured selling process. Dubai may offer marginally better rates for investment-grade bullion specifically, where competition is higher.
The bottom line: if you’re based in Abu Dhabi, there is no compelling reason to drive to Dubai for jewellery. If you’re a tourist flying into Abu Dhabi, this is your souk. If you’re specifically seeking the world’s largest gold market experience or a particular bullion product, Dubai adds something Madinat Zayed doesn’t have.
The Shops — Who’s Here
The Gold Centre houses around 70 jewellery retailers. A mix of major regional chains alongside independent local shops that have operated at this location for years.
Damas Jewellery — One of the oldest and most recognised jewellery brands in the UAE and broader Middle East. Damas has been trading since 1907 and opened its first UAE store in the Dubai Gold Souk in 1959. The Abu Dhabi branch at Madinat Zayed offers its full range across contemporary Arabic and international designs. Reliable for standardised service and transparent pricing.
Malabar Gold & Diamonds — The Kerala-founded group now operating across 13 countries. Strong in South Asian bridal collections, mangalsutras, traditional bangles, and stone-set pieces. A popular destination for Indian expat families in Abu Dhabi, particularly for wedding purchases.
Joyalukkas Jewellery — With over 128 showrooms across 11 countries, Joyalukkas is one of the most recognised Indian jewellery brands globally. The Madinat Zayed branch is noted for competitive making charges and a wide range from everyday chains to elaborate wedding sets. ISO-certified and a multiple award winner in the UAE retail space.
Kalyan Jewellers — Another major Indian jewellery brand with a presence at Madinat Zayed, carrying gold, platinum, diamond, and pearl pieces across collections including Mudhra, Nimah, Anokhi, and Rang. Strong in traditional Indian designs.
Nakshathra Jewellery — Offers contemporary and antique gold designs, including South Indian-influenced sets and Nool necklaces. Located within the Gold Centre.
Jawhara Jewellery — A UAE-based brand offering 18K, 21K, and 22K pieces across modern and traditional styles. Has multiple outlets across Abu Dhabi.
Local independent shops — The Gold Centre also houses smaller, long-established local retailers including Al Harmain Jewellery, Al Jazira Jewellery, Al Riyadh Jewellery, Baniyas Jewellery, and Sunny Jewellery. These independent shops are often the better option for straightforward gold chains, bangles, and plain jewellery where making charges can be negotiated more directly.
Custom jewellery: Multiple shops at Madinat Zayed offer custom-made services — bring a design, a photo, or describe what you want, and they produce it. Turnaround typically 1–2 weeks depending on complexity.
How Pricing Works Here
The gold rate per gram is set centrally by the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group (DGJG) and applies across all UAE emirates — Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and every other city. The same 24K rate you see in Dubai is the same 24K rate displayed in Madinat Zayed. The AED/USD peg at 3.6725 means local prices track international spot directly.

Check this before you go. Walking in knowing the per-gram rate for 22K and 24K gives you an immediate reference point for every quote you receive.
Your total cost = Gold weight × per-gram rate + Making charges + 5% VAT
The gold rate is fixed. Making charges are negotiable. VAT is refundable for tourists.
Making charges at Madinat Zayed run similarly to Dubai’s Gold Souk:
| Piece Type | Typical Making Charge |
|---|---|
| Machine-made chains | 5–8% |
| Plain bangles | 6–10% |
| Rings (standard) | 8–12% |
| Necklaces (plain) | 10–15% |
| Bridal / heavy sets | 18–30% |
These are starting points — what you negotiate to is a separate matter.
How to Shop Here — Step by Step
Before you enter: Check the live gold rate. Note the 22K and 24K per-gram price. This is your anchor for every conversation inside.
Browse first: Walk through the Gold Centre before stopping anywhere. Unlike Dubai’s sprawling lane network, Madinat Zayed’s arcade layout makes it practical to cover most shops in 20–30 minutes of initial browsing. Note which shops are showing pieces you like and mentally flag their making charges.
Ask for the breakdown: When you find a piece, ask: “What is the weight, and what is the making charge separately?” Every shop will answer this. The weight should be confirmed on a calibrated scale in front of you — this is standard practice and a regulatory requirement.
Negotiate the making charge: The gold rate doesn’t move. The making charge does. Open below what they quote — if they say 12%, offer 7% and expect to settle around 9–10%. Buying two pieces from the same shop gives you more room. Paying cash (AED) can provide a small additional edge.
The quieter atmosphere at Madinat Zayed actually helps negotiation. With fewer other customers waiting, shopkeepers have time to have a genuine conversation rather than moving to the next buyer. Use that.
Check the hallmark: Before agreeing, confirm the hallmark stamp on the piece:
- 999 = 24K
- 916 = 22K
- 875 = 21K
- 750 = 18K
Use your phone’s camera zoom on the clasp or inner band if the stamp is small.
Get the invoice: A proper invoice shows: gold weight (grams), karat and per-gram rate for that day, making charges as a separate line, VAT amount, and total. Keep it — you need it for VAT refund and for any future resale or exchange.
Request the VAT refund tag: If you’re a non-UAE resident tourist aged 18+, ask the shop for a Planet Tax Free tag linked to your passport before payment. Minimum spend AED 250 per invoice. You redeem it at Abu Dhabi International Airport’s Planet Tax Free kiosks before departure — approximately 87% of the 5% VAT back, minus a small processing fee.
Buying Gold Bars and Investment Gold in Abu Dhabi
For buyers interested in investment-grade gold rather than jewellery, Abu Dhabi has its own institutional infrastructure worth knowing.
At Madinat Zayed: Several shops carry 24K gold bars and coins — typically from certified refiners. Ask specifically for LBMA-certified bars if you want internationally tradable bullion. UAE Good Delivery bars are the local standard. Prices are close to spot with a small dealer premium (1–3% depending on bar size).
Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX): The ADX provides regulated trading in gold-linked products for institutional and individual investors. Not directly relevant for physical gold buyers, but contextually part of Abu Dhabi’s position as a financial hub.
Emirates Palace Gold Vending Machine: One of Abu Dhabi’s more famous novelties — a gold-dispensing ATM at the Emirates Palace Hotel (now Mandarin Oriental Emirates Palace). It dispenses gold bars and coins at market prices, updated in real time. Bars from 1 gram to 10 grams, plus gold coins. More of an experience than the most cost-efficient way to buy, but the prices are genuine market rates. Worth seeing if you’re in that part of the city.
What to Buy — By Purpose
For investment: 24K gold bars from certified dealers within the Gold Centre. Plain, certified, easily resold. Making charges are minimal (bars carry a spot premium, not a craftsmanship fee). VAT is zero-rated for qualifying B2B investment gold; retail buyers pay 5% upfront but tourists can claim it back.
For jewellery to wear: 22K is the standard for most buyers — high purity, durable enough for daily use. 21K is traditional for Gulf-style heavier pieces. 18K suits modern designs and gem-set pieces where the alloy strength matters.
For gifting: Small gold coins (1g, 2g, 5g) are a clean, verifiable gift that can be resold easily later. Several shops at Madinat Zayed carry assay-certified coins in gift packaging.
For bridal sets: Madinat Zayed’s South Asian-oriented shops — Malabar, Joyalukkas, Kalyan — carry extensive bridal collections. This is a genuine strength of the Abu Dhabi souk, given the large Indian and Pakistani expat community in the capital. Making charges on elaborate bridal sets are higher (18–30%) but negotiable on large-value purchases.
When to Visit
Best time of day: Weekday mornings between 9 AM and noon. The souk has just opened, the floor is unhurried, and shopkeepers have time to walk you through designs properly. Evenings and weekends are busier — still manageable, but less relaxed.
Friday: Opens only from 4:30 PM after afternoon prayers. Plan accordingly. If you arrive at noon on a Friday expecting to shop, you’ll find most of the Gold Centre closed.
Best months: November through March. Abu Dhabi’s mild winter makes the trip pleasant. Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha periods bring genuine promotions from many retailers but also significantly higher footfall — weigh those trade-offs.
Ramadan: Hours shift, with later openings and extended evening trade post-Iftar. Some retailers run Ramadan promotions on making charges. The atmosphere after Iftar in particular has a distinctive character — busier, more festive, and worth experiencing if you’re in Abu Dhabi during the month.
Around Madinat Zayed — What Else Is Nearby
The Gold Centre is part of a larger mall complex that gives you practical reasons to combine your visit with other errands.
LuLu Hypermarket: Inside the same complex. One of the UAE’s most extensive grocery chains. Useful for stocking up on anything from spices to electronics before or after your gold shopping.
Restaurants and cafés: The mall has a range of casual dining options. A post-shopping coffee or lunch without needing to find another venue is a practical convenience that Madinat Zayed’s mall format provides over Dubai’s open-air souk.
Khalidiyah Mall: A 5–10 minute drive from Madinat Zayed. Another established Abu Dhabi mall with dining, cinema, and bowling — worth combining if you’re spending the day in the area.
Corniche Beach: Abu Dhabi’s famous 8-kilometre waterfront is roughly 10–15 minutes by taxi from Madinat Zayed. An easy add-on for visitors — combine gold shopping in the morning with the Corniche in the afternoon.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: Abu Dhabi’s most iconic landmark, approximately 15–20 minutes from Madinat Zayed. If you’re visiting Abu Dhabi for the first time, this and the Gold Souk are natural companions for a single day.
Practical Notes
Language: English is widely spoken in every shop. Hindi, Malayalam, Urdu, and Arabic are also understood by staff in most of the South Asian-oriented retailers — particularly relevant at Malabar, Joyalukkas, and Kalyan.
Payment: Cash (AED) gives marginal negotiating advantage. Cards are accepted everywhere; some shops add a small surcharge for card payments.
Safety and authenticity: All retailers in Madinat Zayed Gold Centre operate under UAE regulatory oversight. Department of Economic Development inspections cover accurate weighing and purity. The compliance rate is high. Buying from any shop inside the Gold Centre carries essentially zero fraud risk on purity.
Parking: Free, ample, easy — a genuine advantage over Dubai’s Gold Souk where parking is limited and expensive.
