Gold Purity Conversion Formulas

Formula 1 — Karat to Purity Percentage

Purity (%) = (Karat ÷ 24) × 100

Example: 22K → (22 ÷ 24) × 100 = 91.67%
Example: 18K → (18 ÷ 24) × 100 = 75.00%
Example: 14K → (14 ÷ 24) × 100 = 58.33%

Formula 2 — Purity to Millesimal Fineness

Millesimal Fineness (‰) = Purity (%) × 10

Example: 91.67% × 10 = 916‰ → This is the BIS 916 hallmark
Example: 75.00% × 10 = 750‰ → This is the BIS 750 hallmark

Formula 3 — Pure Gold Content

Pure Gold (g) = Total Weight (g) × Purity (%)

Example: 10g of 22K gold → 10 × 0.9167 = 9.167g of pure gold
Example: 20g of 18K gold → 20 × 0.7500 = 15g of pure gold

Formula 4 — Gold Value Calculation

Gold Value = Pure Gold Weight (g) × 24K Rate (₹/g)

Example: 9.167g × ₹9,500 = ₹87,086.50

What Do BIS Hallmark Numbers Mean?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) hallmarking system certifies gold jewellery purity. Since 2021, BIS hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery sold in India. The number stamped on certified jewellery is the millesimal fineness.

916
22 Karat Gold
91.6% Pure Gold
The most popular gold purity for jewellery in India. 916 gold is durable and close to pure gold in colour. Required for making intricate designs.
750
18 Karat Gold
75.0% Pure Gold
18K gold (750 hallmark) is harder than 22K, making it ideal for diamond-studded and studded jewellery. Popular in European styles.
585
14 Karat Gold
58.5% Pure Gold
14K gold is more affordable and very durable. The 585 hallmark is common in Western markets and increasingly available in India.
999
24 Karat Gold
99.9% Pure Gold
The purest form of gold. Used for bullion coins, bars, and digital gold investment. Too soft for regular jewellery making.

BIS hallmarked jewellery also carries a 6-digit alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique ID) which can be verified on the BIS Care app or website at www.bis.gov.in.

Frequently Asked Questions — Gold Purity

Gold purity measures the proportion of pure gold in an alloy. It is expressed in three ways: karat (K), millesimal fineness (e.g. 916‰), and percentage (%). 24K gold is the purest at 99.9%. Most jewellery uses 22K (91.6%) or 18K (75%) because pure 24K gold is too soft for everyday wear.
BIS 916 is the Bureau of Indian Standards hallmark for 22K gold. The number 916 means the gold contains 916 parts per thousand — or 91.6% — pure gold. Since 2021, BIS hallmarking is mandatory for all gold jewellery sold in India. The hallmark guarantees the quality of the gold you are buying.
Divide the karat number by 24 and multiply by 100. For 22K: (22 ÷ 24) × 100 = 91.67%. This means 22K gold is 91.67% pure gold. The remaining 8.33% is copper, silver, or zinc added to improve hardness and durability for jewellery making.
10 grams of 22K gold contains 9.167 grams of pure gold. Formula: 10 × 91.67% = 9.167g. At ₹9,500/gram (24K rate), the pure gold value is approximately ₹87,086.50.
916 gold (22K) contains 91.6% pure gold, while 750 gold (18K) contains 75% pure gold. 916 is closer to pure gold in colour and higher in value per gram. 750 (18K) is harder, making it better for detailed and diamond-studded jewellery. Both carry BIS hallmarks certifying their purity.
Gold value = Pure gold weight × 24K rate per gram. Step 1: Calculate pure gold — Weight × Purity%. Step 2: Multiply by the 24K rate. For example: 10g of 22K → 9.167g pure gold → 9.167 × ₹9,500 = ₹87,086.50. Note: actual purchase or sale price may differ due to making charges, GST, and dealer margins.
24K gold is purer (99.9%) and more valuable per gram, but it is too soft for most jewellery — it scratches and bends easily. 22K gold (91.6% pure) strikes the best balance between purity and durability, which is why it is the most popular choice for gold jewellery in India and the GCC.
Gold coins and bars sold by banks and certified dealers in India are typically 24K (999‰ millesimal fineness — 99.9% pure). Some coins, such as the Sovereign gold bond and RBI coins, are 999 purity. Always check the BIS certification or assay certificate when buying gold coins or bars.
